Fidget Toys

Fidget Toys

We are in the midst of a new fidget toy craze which includes the popper and the ‘remote control’. Although I don’t stock either, we have several in our house and I can happily say that they are cool toys. However, I do suspect that in 6 months time, ours will be at the bottom of a drawer along with a pile of squishies and fidget spinners. I know this is the life cycle of most toys but it’s something I find hard to justify.

Although ‘Fidget Toys’ seem to be something of a new phenomenon, the reality is that they have been around since we were kids, we just didn’t call them ‘fidget toys’ (probably because we were told not to fidget!). Now, play therapists and educational psychologists will endorse the use of fidget toys. They see the following benefits to allowing some children to fidget:

  • they can also reduce anxiety and stress,
  • enhance dexterity,
  • improve coordination and fine motor skills
  • assist in the development of muscles of small hands
  • and sharpen their focus
  • They can be especially helpful for children who have special needs, sensory processing differences, ADD, or ADHD.

And, that’s just to name a few.

Although I don’t stock the current ‘craze’ of fidget toys, I do keep in stock a large selection of old school fidget toys, which include

Ok, I could keep going but I think 15 is enough here and if you want to see more, you’ll find the vast majority in the ‘Toys for less than €5‘ category on my website.

Sometimes I think I can be very hard on kids today, thinking things like ‘we never had fidget toys when I was young’ but the reality is that if a child is prone to fidgeting, whether in the past or present, they will fidget. For many in my generation, this might have meant biting nails, cracking knuckles, swinging in a chair or constantly needing to move. Isn’t it great that fidget toys are now acccepted as benefital and helpful to children’s learning experiences? I know that not all children need fidget toys to help them learn and develop in school but for those that do, toys like these are really helpful and for those that don’t, toys like these are still great fun to play with, even if you aren’t allowed to play with them in school!

As always, if you have any questions about any of the toys featured in this blog, please don’t hesitate to message me and ask.

xx Suzie
