The joy of sharing a book with your child this Christmas

The joy of sharing a book with your child this Christmas
This week, I’m delighted to have a guest blogger write this blog on ‘sharing a book with your child this Christmas’. Mary Miles is a friend of mine, a mum to two little people and she also has her own business called the Little Book Worm – so she has a wealth of experience and knowledge on this topic.

Here’s what she has to share…..
“I was always a Little Book Worm really. As the youngest child of 5 I was usually most at home with my head buried in a new book! I loved the feeling of being instantly transported to a far away place with exciting characters and magical adventures unfolding before me.
It was therefore an obvious choice for me to start a business selling the wonderful range of Usborne Children’s Books. I remember Usborne’s Aesop’s Fables being one of my favourite books as a child – I still have it today! As a parent I feel so fortunate to have such wonderful children’s books available to me. Outside of the Usborne range my girls love Julia Donaldson’s books – The Gruffalo and the Gruffalo’s Child are firm favourites. We absolutely love the clever rhymes and the wonderful illustrations. From Usborne’s great storybook collections for bedtime reading we love the Big Book of First Experiences and the Complete Book of Farmyard Tales (find the yellow duck on every page!). From the massively broad range of lift the flap and look inside books, we love Look Inside My Body and Peep Inside Zoo. We never tire of the vast activity books range and always have something to do or something new to learn on a rainy day!

Now that Christmas is upon us I can’t wait to wrap up a book for everyday of Advent. It is a wonderful tradition that I would highly recommend for children of all ages. I individually wrap up 24 small new books and leave them in a pile near the Christmas tree with a cozy blanket. Each evening in Advent we snuggle up in the blanket and open a new book to read together under the tree.
As an alternative to a chocolate Advent calendar we have the brilliant Advent Calender to Colour.

We open a new window to colour every morning and by Christmas Eve have the most beautifully coloured Christmas town scene.
These little rituals and traditions are what make Christmas really special to me. I know that my children will grow up with an appreciation for books and story-telling and I hope I am helping to create Christmas memories for them that will last a life-time. “
